I saw her for the first time at an undisclosable activity center.
There was nothing extraordinary about the moment itself. No dramatic encounter, no exchange of glances that promised a story, no words spoken between two strangers. And yet, something about her caught my attention in a way I could neither explain nor ignore.
It began with her voice.
She was calling her son, and the sound of her voice rang through me like little bells. There was a tenderness in it, a warmth that seemed to reach beyond the words she spoke. It was loving, reassuring, and strangely captivating. Her presence had a charisma of its own, something that drew my attention without making any effort to do so.
I found myself looking at her again and again.
That was unusual for me. I had never been someone who paid such attention to another woman in this way. But there was something different about her. Something I couldn't put into words, something that seemed to exist beyond what my eyes could see.
I didn't know her. I knew nothing about her life, her struggles, or the person she was when nobody was watching.
I didn't even know why her presence affected me so deeply.
All I knew was that I could feel something.
An energy, perhaps. A quiet yet powerful warmth that seemed to radiate from somewhere within her. I was drawn to it before I had any understanding of what it was or where it came from. I was too busy feeling its effect on me to question its source.
She was married to another man. That was a reality, just as she was, at that moment, a complete stranger to me. But emotional connections do not always begin with an explanation, nor do they wait for us to understand the circumstances in which they arise.
Sometimes, we feel drawn to someone without knowing why. The mind searches for reasons, while the heart remains caught in a feeling it cannot quite name.
That was where I found myself that day.
I wanted to speak to her. To find a way to bridge the distance between us, even if only for a moment. But she was a stranger, and I had no reason to believe that the inexplicable feeling I was experiencing meant anything beyond my own private world.
So I remained where I was, watching, listening, and wondering.
The encounter lasted barely ten minutes.
Ten minutes of hearing her voice, observing her presence, and experiencing a feeling I could not explain. Then the moment passed, as ordinary moments do, leaving me with nothing tangible to hold on to.
Or so I thought.
What I couldn't have known then was that the energy I had felt so strongly had a story of its own. There was a depth to her tenderness, a history behind her warmth, and a pain she carried within herself that I would only come to understand much later.
At that moment, I knew nothing of it.
I didn't know that beneath the person I had briefly encountered lay a world of emotions, wounds, and experiences that had shaped her in ways I could not yet imagine. I didn't know what life had asked her to endure, or how much of herself she had learned to carry silently.
That understanding would come later, when our lives had moved beyond the distance between two strangers and we had somehow found ourselves locked within each other's emotional space. Only then would I begin to understand the depth behind the energy that had drawn me to her that first day.
Only then would the pieces begin to fall into place.
But that is a story for another chapter.
For now, all I can say is that something about her reached me in those few minutes. Something I could feel but could not explain, something that stayed with me long after she had become a part of the crowd again.
Perhaps I was simply captivated by a stranger's warmth. Perhaps there was something in her presence that resonated with something deep within me.
I didn't have the answers.
I only had the feeling.
And sometimes, a feeling is all a story needs to begin.
Ten minutes.
That was all the time I had spent in her presence.
Yet those ten minutes seemed to carve a place for her in my heart, a place I had not known was waiting for anyone.
She left without knowing what had happened within me.
And I walked away without knowing that, someday, I would come to understand the story behind the energy I had felt that day.
I had seen her for the first time.
I had no idea that I had only just begun to see her.
Some stories begin before we know they have.
